D-Day: The Allied Invasion of Normandy

Historical Significance of D-Day

Normandy Landings

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched a massive invasion of Normandy, France, known as the Normandy landings. This operation was a pivotal moment in World War II, marking the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany.

D-Day Invasion

D-Day, as it became known, involved the landing of over 156,000 troops from the United States, Britain, and Canada onto the heavily fortified beaches of Normandy. The invasion was preceded by extensive airborne operations, with paratroopers and glider troops landing behind enemy lines.

Normandy Campaign

The Normandy landings were just the first phase of a larger campaign that aimed to secure control of Western Europe. Allied forces faced fierce resistance from the German army, but eventually managed to push them back and liberate France and other occupied territories.
