Denmarks Role In The European Union

Denmark's Role in the European Union

Overview

Denmark has been a member of the European Union (EU) since 1973. Its membership has been marked by several key issues, including the country's opt-outs from certain EU policies and its active participation in EU decision-making.

Denmark's Opt-Outs

Denmark has negotiated several opt-outs from EU policies, including the euro currency, the Common Security and Defence Policy, and the Schengen Area. These opt-outs allow Denmark to maintain its own positions on these issues while still participating in the EU's wider cooperation.

Denmark's Foreign Policy

Denmark's foreign policy is closely aligned with the EU's common foreign and security policy. The country actively participates in EU initiatives and is a strong supporter of the EU's common market and single currency.

Denmark in the European Parliament

Denmark is represented by 14 members in the European Parliament. These MEPs are elected by Danish citizens and represent the country's interests in the EU's legislative body.

Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU

Denmark will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU during the second half of 2025. This will give the country a leading role in shaping the EU's agenda and priorities.
