Brady Quinn’s ‘all for’ a Donovan Edwards/Kalel Mullings two-back set

Michigan football: Brady Quinn likes Donovan Edwards-Kalel Mullings tandem

Former Michigan football quarterback Brady Quinn suggested this week that the Wolverines could benefit from using a two-running back system that features Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings.

“I think it's something that they should absolutely explore,” Quinn said on “The Rich Eisen Show.” “I mean, you've got two really talented running backs. And I think they can complement each other very well.”

Edwards, a sophomore, rushed for 872 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Mullings, a redshirt sophomore, carried the ball 25 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

“Edwards is a more elusive, shifty runner,” Quinn said. “He's got great speed. He can make people miss. Mullings is a little bit more of a power back. He's got good size. He can run through tackles.”

Edwards and Mullings could form a dynamic duo

Quinn believes that Edwards and Mullings could form a dynamic duo in the Michigan backfield.

“I think they could really complement each other well,” Quinn said. “You could have Edwards in the game on third down and passing situations. And then you could have Mullings in the game on first and second down and short-yardage situations.”

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has not yet said whether he plans to use a two-running back system this season. However, Quinn's comments suggest that it is a possibility.

Quinn’s comments come after Edwards and Mullings both had strong performances in Michigan’s spring game.

Edwards rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Mullings added 47 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

“I was really impressed with what I saw from both of those guys in the spring game,” Quinn said. “I think they're both ready to take on a bigger role this season.”
